Back in March Q2 Music kicked off the second season of its great “Q2 Spaces” video series with an episode on composer and pianist Timo Andres, who’s teaming up with our own Ensemble LPR for a concert on Wednesday, May 28.

Watch that episode below for an up-close look at Andres and his influences and inspirations, from Ingram Marshall, who he studied with at the Yale School of Music, to Edward Gorey (“My entire persona is based on Edward Gorey books”). He also shares some interesting details about his creative process. Here’s an excerpt from Q2’s post on the episode:

“Andres describes his ‘found sound’ approach to composition as a kind of peculiar surgery, explaining that he will dissect the structure of a preexisting piece, remove its skeleton, and fill in his own notes to the skeleton. Other times he hunts for evocative, misfit chords – such as one from the second movement of Sibelius’s Violin Concerto – to serve as a jumping off point, something which Andres is quick to illustrate at the piano.”

This isn’t the first time Andres has invited a camera into his home. Below you can check out I Care If You Listen’s videos of him discussing his music and performing “At the River” (2011) in the same Bed-Stuy apartment.

Mark your calendars and get your tickets: Timo Andres performs with Ensemble LPR on Wednesday May 28.
