Preview Daniel Lanois’ “Opera”

You may have heard that we’re presenting an incredible evening of music at Brooklyn Masonic Temple on November 10. The evening centers around Daniel Lanois, the producer, musician, and all-around interesting character. He’ll be performing work from a new solo record titled Flesh and Machine, which will be released by Anti on October 28.

You get a pretty amazing peak at what Flesh and Machine will be like (a return toward his collaborations with Brian Eno — a little like Ambient 4: On Land but with a little more edge and energy?) in the performance of the track “Opera” below. It was performed live in Lanois’ Los Angeles home and you get a pretty intimate portrait of his home and features co-engineer and producer Alex Krispin and drummer Kyle Crane of Everest.

Here’s what Robin Hilton of All Songs Considered had to say about the track and album:

“At a glorious seven-and-a-half minutes, this live version of ‘Opera’ is more than twice as long as it is on the actual album. Like the other cuts on Flesh And Machine, it’s built out of layers of samples, recorded snippets and heavily processed instruments. ‘Opera’ is dark and glossy, full of drama, with a brilliant build to it that grows more and more chaotic. Lanois says he wanted to make the year’s best headphones album. If ‘Opera’ is any indication, he may have pulled it off.”

Lanois will be performing along with a number of other Anti artists including Tinariwen, The Antlers, and Lonnie Holley. Tickets are available here.
