Wheatus

what if you really REALLY loved your part time job?

…but, what if it didn’t pay enough?

well then you may be in wheatus.

It’s a special time for music; not too much of it sticks and when it does well, it usually isn’t everyone’s cuppa.

“…we really don’t run into people who don’t like dirtbag, including us.”, wheatus frontman, producer, songwriter brendan b brown tells us, whilst fiddling with a vacuum tube that reads “Made In West Germany”. It seems that wheatus do indeed still love playing their multi-platinum, ubiquitous 2001 classic, Teenage Dirtbag.

“I grew up idolizing Rush & AC/DC. Bands that last forever…One of the fears I had when Dirtbag kicked off was that it would get old quick or be received as a fad…I was wrong to worry about that. It feels new every night. I think that’s because it’s hard to play correctly, but what the hell do I know?”

It has not been an easy go for brown & crew. They scrape recording & touring budgets together by selling last years gear on ebay. “It’s an interesting paradox that people won’t buy music but they still buy the stuff to make it and that we can carry on that way…together, we found a way forward. I still can’t believe it started 15 years ago though…that’s hard to imagine for a song that continues to be renewed. We owe a debt to that album and to the people who remember us. Now lemme get back to rehearsal so we can get it right!”

So yes, at least one band from before the days of iTunes & Spotify have found a way forward …and forward they come, on a full tour of the UK, Ireland & EU playing their ENTIRE FIRST ALBUM plus songs from their 2nd, 3rd, 4th 5th, 6th & 7th.

Schaffer The Darklord

Schaffer the Darklord (or STD) is a New York City-based rapper and comedian with material best-suited for brainy and/or drug-addled audiences. With manic energy, verbose vocabulary and cartoonishly commanding stage presence, STD skewers such topics as hedonistic substance abuse, sexual compulsion, gender identity, urban anxiety and obsessive cat-enthusiasts. Imagine a Frankenstein-esque monster assembled from equal parts Bill Hicks, Eminem, Prince, Ozzy Osbourne and Darth Vader, stitched together inside the shell of a maniacal heavy metal ex-patriot. STD has released five full-length albums (2004’s “Meet My Maker,” 2007’s “Mark of the Beast,” 2009’s “Manslaughterer,” 2012’s “Junk Drawer” and 2013’s “Sick Passenger”), toured the country with such artists as MC Chris, MC Frontalot, Mega Ran and MC Lars and made multiple appearances on the Science Channel television program “Oddities.” When he’s not on the road, he emcees countless burlesque events and produces/co-hosts The Epic Piecast on the Nerdy Show Podcast Network. STD continues to write, record and perform with great frequency and has no intention of giving up until his masochist rock-n-roll lifestyle destroys him.

Hand Job Academy

Hand Job Academy or H.J.A. for short, is a Brooklyn-based hip-hop group formed in 2012, comprising three emcees: AshWednesday, Clara Bizna$$, and Uncle Meg (who doubles as the group’s videographer, Director, & Editor).

Controversial, outspoken, nasty-but-charming, the Academy raps about periods, pop culture, and queerness as well as traditional hip-hop themes of fucking bitches, getting money, and superiority over enemies. Their live show is a raucous party not to be missed!

Straddling the worlds of comedy and hip-hop, H.J.A. has shared stages with the likes of Big Dipper, MC Frontalot, Cakes Da Killa, and the late Nicky Da B. The Academy has opened for comedians Sasheer Zamata, Janeane Garofalo, Kristin Schaal, and Gilbert Gottfried, and has made multiple appearances on the public access TV program, The Chris Gethard Show. In September 2014, they supported Wheatus on a leg of their UK tour.

The girls released the tracks “Pop (Tumblr Bitches)” and “Take Me 2 Skool” through Tommy Boy Entertainment in mid-2013, but gained more widespread attention via “Shark Week” a track about Aunt Flo’s monthly visit. “Shark Week” was featured on The Cut, Jezebel, Bust, Bullett, and achieved “Lowbrow Brilliant” status on the New York Magazine Approval Matrix. Their debut album “#IKEAMONKEY” was released in August 2014 and peaked at #22 on the CMJ hip-hop charts.

MC Lars

Northern California rapper, MC Lars, is set to release his 4th full-length studio album, the Zombie Dinosaur LP, at the end of this coming summer. He has returned home to the Bay Area after living in Los Angeles these past three years, and is self-producing his new album with help from friends in Berkeley and San Francisco.

The Zombie Dinosaur LP revisits the satirical, funny, uptempo style of Lars’ 2004 debut album, the Laptop EP. It features guest appearances by Watsky, Kool Keith, and Less than Jake’s Roger Lima. Zombie Dinosaur tackles such topics as postfeminism, in a nod to Game of Thrones (“Dragon Blood”); disappointing reunion bands with very few of their original members (“Sublime with Rome is Not the Same thing as Sublime”); hipster parenting (“Hipster Mom”); and the current state of EDM (“Signing Dubstep”).

The project was funded entirely by Lars’s third highly successful Kickstarter campaign, through which he raised over $42k to create and release Zombie Dinosaur under his own label, Horris Records.

In the ten years that have followed his debut release, the Laptop EP, Lars has independently produced and released three other solo full-length albums, four EPs, and a number of mixtapes.

He has collaborated with KRS-One, mentored and helped develop the career of fellow Stanford alum K.Flay (with whom he collaborated on the 2009 Single and Famous EP), opened for Nas and Snoop Dogg, and played multiple summers on the Vans Warped Tour. He has also headlined club shows across the US and in Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.

Lars has spoken and presented at two different TEDx conferences, performed at Carnegie Hall with a live string section (at Scholastic’s 2012 Art and Writing Awards – where he debuted the video for his song, “Flow Like Poe,” which is the lead single on his 2012 Edgar Allan Poe EP).

Lars has developed and grown Horris Records in this past decade, signing the label’s first artist, Weerd Science (the solo hip-hop project of Cohered & Cambria’s drummer, Josh Eppard). Lars has continued to produce music videos for himself and his friends, including a cameo credit on past musical collaborator “Weird Al” Yankovic’s 2014 “Lame Claim to Fame” (for which Lars was given a special shout out in the liner notes to Al’s Grammy Award winning album, Mandatory Fun).

Having been labeled as one of the pioneers of the underground “nerdcore hip-hop” subgenre, Lars has recently expanded from the studio to the classroom. With visiting scholar/teacher residencies at USC, and in the UK, and across the US in Nantucket, Florida, California, Alaska, and Kansas, Lars has found joy in educating young people about “lit-hop,” a subject term he coined to highlight the connections between literature, classical poetry, and the cultural history of rap.

Lars has continued to work closely with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, teaching workshops on preventing self-harm, and positive ways to use music as creative therapy for depression. He has also worked with the American Heart Association, promoting youth heart health.

It’s been quite a decade.
