In an exceptional melding of man and machine, Dan Tepfer uses the Yamaha Disklavier CFX piano to bring together his world-class pianism with his background in physics and programming. As he improvises, the piano responds in real time with notes of its own, the keys of the keyboard depressing themselves as if by magic. For different pieces, the pianist has programmed a variety of approaches for how the Disklavier’s responses are constructed, leading to unique sonic signatures for each. “I think of the best music as a delicate combination of the spiritual and the algorithmic”, says Tepfer. “Certainly that’s the case of Bach, whose music is a long-time inspiration for me: it’s at once heavily rule-based and emotionally transcendent”. With this project, the computer takes care of the algorithmic side, leaving the 32-year-old pianist-composer all the more free to focus on the human element. Although the only sound we hear is the sound of an acoustic concert-grand piano, “it’s like playing a fundamentally new instrument”, says Tepfer, whose previous solo exploration, Goldberg Variations / Variations, has received wide international acclaim.
Joining Tepfer are four members of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE, http://www.iceorg.org): clarinetist Joshua Rubin, bassoonist Rebekah Heller, flutist Alice Teyssier and saxophonist Ryan Muncy.

Table seating for all seated shows is reserved exclusively for ticket holders who purchase “Table Seating” tickets. By purchasing a “Table Seating” ticket you agree to also purchase a minimum of two food and/or beverage items per person. Table seating is first come, first seated. Please arrive early for the best choice of available seats. Seating begins when doors open. Tables are communal so you may be seated with other patrons. We do not take table reservations.
A standing room area is available by the bar for all guests who purchase “Standing Room” tickets. Food and beverage can be purchased at the bar but there is no minimum purchase required in this area.
All tickets sales are final. No refund or credits.

Dan Tepfer’s Acoustic Informatics featuring ICE
Born in Paris to American parents, “tremendously gifted” (LA Times) pianist-composer Dan Tepfer has translated his bi-cultural identity into an exploration of music that ignores stylistic bounds. His 2011 Goldberg Variations / Variations, which pairs his performance of Bach’s work with improvised variations of his own, has received broad praise as a “riveting, inspired, fresh musical exploration” (New York Times). He has worked with the leading lights in jazz, including extensively with saxophone luminary Lee Konitz, while releasing seven albums as a leader. As a composer, he is a recipient of the Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters for works including Concerto for Piano and Winds, premiered in the Prague Castle with himself on piano, and Solo Blues for Violin and Piano, premiered at Carnegie Hall. Bringing together his undergraduate studies in astrophysics with his passion for music, he is currently working on integrating computer-driven algorithms into his improvisational approach. Awards include first prize and audience prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition, first prize at the East Coast Jazz Festival Competition, and the Cole Porter Fellowship from the American Pianists Association. His recent soundtrack for the independent feature Movement and Location was voted Best Original Score at the 2014 Brooklyn Film Festival.
