Equal parts disco, boogie, and house, Light Up The Night will be reaching back to the halcyon years of New York night music. From the underground sounds of private press studio sessions to the limelight of disco proper and the hand-over to Chicago, all aimed at rush hour traffic on the dance floor. Expect a program of choice selections, deep digs, and top flight DJs stopping by to share the love of a generation's prolific dance floor production. Stop by for a genuine, intimate D.I.S.C.O. experience!

Tackleberry

Alex Biedermann a/k/a Tackleberry began DJing on wnyu.org playing Soul and Funk before switching to the FM dial as co-host of Plastic Tales From The Marshmallow Dimention. Oddly enough, it was his Sunday evening Internet radio gig that grabbed the attention of a local club owner, and after getting his first taste of the live scene, he teamed up with a group of fellow WNYU DJs for the monthly Serious Business and Full Service parties. Tackleberry currently hosts A Downtown Affair with Mike McGill where he spins classic and soulful Disco and Boogie.

Mike McGill

Mike McGill’s emergence on the music scene marks a reverse entry of sorts. Initially delving into the output of disco-house records from the early ‘00s, he soon traced the lineage back to its source. After a first listen to Cloud One’s Atmosphere Strutt, he felt a yearning to find context for this music. Mike hooked up with Environ Records, the seminal second-generation disco/boogie label based in NY to continue a self-carved path of musical education. In 2007, Mike developed the weekly radio program A Downtown Affair, New York’s only remaining FM broadcast dedicated to unearthing disco and boogie music after the void left by KISS FM; at once both an homage to NY pre-internet radio culture and outlet for a healthy obsession. A Downtown Affair straddles an interesting space; preserving the vibe that once defined a city, while concurrently bringing that music to a younger generation in an altered context. Along with Tackleberry, Mike produced the successful Serious Business night in Brooklyn playing overtly intimate boogie records, and turning people on to the sound of adult contemporary. Mike’s program of music is defined by a playful sensibility, interlacing the veneer of early ‘80s boogie/R&B productions and Zanzibar relics with bona fide D.I.S.C.O. - always honest and sometimes deep, creating the vibe that feel good music should.

Daniel Auster

After walking out of his first rave at 7am back in 1993 Daniel Auster found it impossible not to begin DJing. What he'd seen and heard that night was like nothing he'd ever experienced before and thus was born his deep love for dance music in all forms. Initially Daniel focused on House music and began playing regularly at raves, afterhours, clubs, and bars, mostly in the New York City area. As he grew older and his record buying intensified, he yearned to learn the roots of dance music and to find out the origin of the samples that his beloved House music used to such genius effect. Over the next ten years Daniel's taste and DJing style grew expansively towards Disco, Soul, Boogie, Funk, as well as electronic music in its many variations. This earned him the pleasure to play his interpretation of the music he's been passionate about to many New Yorkers, as well as DJing at various parties across the country. The main goal, no matter what style he plays, is to get people on the dance floor, to fill them with joy and to leave them wanting more. Daniel currently stays sweaty and dusty digging deep at A-1 Records, keeping the bins filled with the best House and Disco from the past and present that New York City has to offer. Daniel will be bringing this mantra of happiness on the dance floor with him in his record bag, wherever he goes.
