Acclaimed French Pianist Alexandre Tharaud will perform selections from his new album Swinging Paris – Le Boeuf Sur le Toit, a new album of jazz music inspired by the legendary 1920s Parisian cabaret. The music features a kaleidoscopic selection from composers ranging from Ravel to Gershwin to W.C. Handy, and Tharaud will be joined by several musical guests including tenor Jean Delescluse, NYC singer Jamie Leonhart and more.

This new release caps a busy year for Alexandre – he starred in Michael Haneke’s film Amour, which took the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival (Tharaud also provided the soundtrack to the album), and he was also featured on the smash hit Fifty Shades of Grey – The Classical Album.

Tharaud previewed Swinging Paris – Le Boeuf Sur le Toit during a packed concert at (le) Poisson Rouge this past April, with the New York Times reporting: Mr. Tharaud played “Chopinata,” a clever jazz fantasy on Chopin themes by Clément Doucet, who was the house pianist at Boeuf Sur le Toit during its heyday. It was fun to hear his breezy account of “Five O’Clock Foxtrot,” an arrangement of a dance episode from Ravel’s opera “L’Enfant et les Sortilèges.” He ended with a tasteful rendition of “The Man I Love,” the Gershwin classic.

Mr. Tharaud played with a subdued sensitivity and delicacy of touch that
demanded close attention. He got it. There were times during his performance that
Le Poisson Rouge seemed like the most intimate of recital halls.

– The New York Times, reviewing Alexandre at (le) Poisson Rouge this past April

Alexandre Tharaud, piano

The biggest surprise on this wonderfully exuberant and exhilarating disc comes with the very first notes: the piano tone is rich and full… There’s never a dull moment, and Tharaud’s range of touch and colour, and his sheer enthusiasm, shine through every jewel-like piece” . These are the comments by critic Andrew Clements/The Guardian on Alexandre’s new CD featuring a selection of Scarlatti Sonatas released last January for Virgin Classics.

For harmonia mundi, Alexandre made a series of successful and award winning recordings including the highly celebrated Rameau CD, followed by Ravel (complete piano works), Bach’s Italian Concerti , Couperin, Satie and a series of Chopin CDs (Waltzes, the Twenty-Four Préludes), the last one of which, Journal Intime, was his first Virgin Classics CD.

This resulted in extensive performances worldwide including Palais des Beaux-Arts/Philharmonie in Brussels, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Théâtre du Châtelet, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Bern’s Casino (MeisterZyklus series), Köln and Essen Philharmonies, Prague Rudolfinum, BBC PROMS, South Bank and Wigmore Hall in London, Seoul Arts Centre, Oji Hall in Tokyo, Taipei National Concert Hall, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Miller Theatre in New York and Washington Performing Arts Series.

Alexandre has been invited to play with international orchestras in Germany, Canada, Japan, Asia (Taïwan, Japan and Singapore), Australia and France under the baton of Lionel Bringuier, Bernard Labadie, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Jean Fournet, Marc Minkowski, Stéphane Denève, Claus Peter-Flor, Stefan Blunier and Georges Prêtre.

His knowledge of French music extends beyond the main repertoire and includes contemporary composers such as Thierry Pécou and Gérard Pesson, whose concerto he will premiere in December 2012 with the Tonhalle in Zürich and the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra. His projects, ‘Hommages à Rameau’ and ‘Hommage à Couperin’, in which he combines a selection of the old masters’ works with tributes by contemporary composers, will be followed by ‘PianoSong’, a contemporary music programme inspired by pop songs.

Jamie Leonhart

Idiosyncratic singer-songwriters are so much in vogue right now that a free-thinking talent like Jamie Leonhart has a shot at mainstream crossover success. Leonhart’s songs can be smart, whimsical or atmospheric, and her strong melodic sense and soulful feel can handle jazzy downtempo or folk-pop (imagine Feist, Laura Nyro and Corinne Bailey Rae on a bicycle built for three). Those who breathe heavily whenever Joanna Newsom strums her harp should note that Leonhart plays both the glockenspiel and the harmonium.
