ArtBattles presents "King of NY"
Marking ArtBattles 5th show at (Le) Poisson Rouge, four top artists return to paint with the hopes of representing NYC in a three week battle against local artists in Barcelona.
Artist Bios:
Ben Angotti weaves traditional drawing and painting with fantasy and dream-like imagery. He is highly influenced by classic Renaissance and Japanese samurai symbolism. Ben often uses these themes combined with images of modern sex and violence to make uniquely beautiful and pulpy scenes. For Ben, the visual impact his work inflicts upon a viewer is more important than the idea or meaning behind it.
Yatika Starr Fields is of the Cherokee, Creek, and Osage tribes, and is a member of the Bear Clan and has been making art since he was a child. His drawings, paintings and collages were sophisticated and showed a natural intuitive understanding of composition and design. Yatika attended the Art Institute of Boston while simultaneously exploring urban Graffiti culture. It was during this time that he became involved in large area paintings and started working more on mural projects. Moving to New York in 2004, Yatika continued his pursuit of a career in painting participating in over a dozen shows around the United States, primarily in New York and Sante Fe.
Andre Trenier lives to create. A graduate of LaGuardia High School and the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, he has continued to craft his skills working in any and every material available to him. In 2004, he co-founded Tangible Thoughts LLC, a creative collective best known for customizing high-end fashion and sneakers. Driven by a competitive nature and a passion for all things artistic, Andre continues to amaze viewers with not only his skill, but his attention to detail and pursuit for perfection.
Leif McIlwaine was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. At 12 years old, Leif caught his first glimpse of good graffiti while in Barcelona. After seeing such amazing colors, characters, and text, Leif decided that this was what he would devote his life to. He has been improving and testing his skills ever since and his explosive style and surprisingly simple technique continues to be a crowd favorite. Leif is also known for opening Brooklyn’s only a graffiti art supply store and gallery, AlphaBeta, in 2008.
ArtBattles, at the forefront of New York City's live art movement, has been helping artists connect to the public. Like jazz musicians, these painters grab their instruments and attempt to entertain and inspire the world around them. The live audience enhances and energizes the work of the artist while the crowd feels a personal connection to the piece. The artists in this battle were selected based on their noteworthy style, personality and influence on NYC’s Live Art scene.
