FatCat are pleased to announce that I Mean To Live Here Still, the album resulting from a collaboration between David Karsten Daniels and 9-piece avant-jazz collective "Fight The Big Bull", is released today.

The collaboration took flight over 2009, as Daniels worked on a new set of music (a follow up to 2008’s gorgeous Fear of Flying. ), taking lyrics from the poems of 19th Century American author-poet Henry David Thoreau. Daniels began sending sketches of songs to White in September 2009. White scored arrangements – masterfully put together – that flutter, trill, groove and crash, bracing and swelling around Daniels’ honeyed voice. Contributing as much reserved, considered ensemble playing as free-jazz vibrancy, Fight the Big Bull’s attention to detail and subtlety in their performance also yields a result comparable in places to the West Coast minimalists - Terry Riley/Pauline Oliveros/La Monte Young etc. – whilst noticeably referring to various strains of trad. jazz in others. A departure of sorts for the band, but one that beautifully interacts with Daniels’ songwriting.

Recorded in only two days in mid-January the album has a joyously live and spontaneous feel and yet also feels very controlled. It is very much a cohesive whole that rewards repeated listening through the quirks and improvised flourishes that only accomplished musicians can bring to a live recording.

SUNY Stony Brook Composers’ CD Release Party

Description

Program:
The Escher String Quartet with Andrew Nolen, bass-baritone:
Eugene Drucker: Four Sonnets by Shakespeare
I. When, in disgrace with Fortune and men’s eyes
II. When to the sessions of sweet silent thought
III. The expense of spirit in a waste of shame
IV. That time of year thou mayst in me behold

The Escher String Quartet:
-Selections from Zemlinsky String Quartet No. 4 (Suite) op. 25 (1936)
-Selections from Bartok String Quartet No. 4, Sz. 91 (1927)

Peter Winkler, piano and composer & Dorothea Cook, violin:
-Selections from “Silken Rags”

Jacob Rhodebeck, piano:
-Folklore 3 by Michael Finnissy (1994)

Come celebrate the release of “Stony Brook Soundings, Volume I & II” – a Double-CD of SUNY Stony Brook composers and performers released on Bridge Records in April 2010. This event will feature contemporary and classical performances by The Escher String Quartet, bass-baritone Andrew Nolen, composer and pianist Peter Winkler, violinist Dorothea Cook, and pianist Jacob Rhodebeck.

Since the founding of the Department of Music at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in the mid-1960s, the campus has been a hotbed of activity in the field of contemporary music producing many of the leading performers and composers of music of our day. This two-volume release samples the collaborative atmosphere between students and faculty, offering premiere recordings of ten exciting new compositions.

Volume I features the up-and-coming Escher String Quartet, hailed for its “glowing tone and insightful musicianship” by the New York Times. The Eschers, who served as Visiting Lecturers in Residence with Stony Brook’s Emerson String Quartet in 2007-8, give virtuosic performances of 5 new works - four of them quintets featuring a guest artist. Daniel A Weymouth’s in (all) the time we have left, with clarinetist Oskar Espina Ruiz, begins the album in a flurry of fiery gestures. The harmonic lushness of Max Giteck Duykers’ Glass Blue Cleft, moves into transcendental realms. Kellojen kumarrus by Ilari Kaila, with Jacob Rhodebeck on piano, is a profound “in memoriam” work that both celebrates life and laments life lost. Eugene Drucker (founder of the Emerson String Quartet) makes a stunning debut as composer with his Four Sonnets By Shakespeare, featuring baritone Andrew Nolen. Perry Goldstein’s jazzy and rhythmically driving Quintet for Alto Saxophone and String Quartet, featuring acclaimed saxophonist Kenneth Tse, closes the first volume.

Volume II, a vigorously eclectic collection of music, reveals Stony Brook’s wide range of aesthetics at its best. Opening the disk is Sheila Silver’s provocative Twilight’s Last Gleaming -- a heartfelt response to the Iraq (and all) war -- for two pianos and two percussion, performed by distinguished Stony Brook faculty, Gilbert Kalish, Eduardo Leandro, and Christina Dahl, and joined by percussionist Kevin Dufford. Tyler Capp’s Stranger Variations incorporates both traditional and bluegrass fiddling techniques, which, under the expert bow of violinist Claudia Schaer, cannot fail to delight. Cello master Colin Carr leads an ensemble of 7 cellists in Peter Winkler’s imaginative and playful Fantasy for cello septet. Daria Semegen carries her lifelong enchantment with electronic music into the realm of piano music in her Vignette, expertly performed by pianist Cathy Callis. And, to end the disk, Margaret Schedel’s “ferociously interactive” world comes alive in The Beautiful Don’t Lack the Wound, featuring guest artist Esther Lamneck on the exotic and rarely heard Hungarian folk instrument, táragató, with interactive electronics.

Stony Brook does not espouse musical orthodoxy; rather, it offers an environment where the passions and aesthetics of several generations of composers and performers inspire, intermingle and interconnect. This richly textured musical community has nurtured the freshness and diversity of musical styles heard in Stony Brook Soundings. At the turn of the millennium, Stony Brook continues to be a boon to musical creativity.

Nonclassical Records presents

Description

A new music scene is currently emerging in London… Over the last few years ‘classical club-nights’ have started to become a rare but growing feature in the night-life of London. This has been fueled by the new generation of classical performers, composers and promoters who are redefining the rules, and breaking out of the constraints of the traditional classical concert hall.

At the forefront of this new movement is NONCLASSICAL. Founded by composer Gabriel Prokofiev in 2003, NONCLASSICAL is a club-night, UK based record label, and possibly a new genre of music (according to Rough Trade records). The club-night is at The Horse & Groom (an old, live-music pub in Shoreditch, East London), and the audience is never the typical white-haired classical crowd, but that young-generation of music lovers who are searching for the latest exciting developments in music. Each month innovative and virtuosic young classical musicians from the UK blow away audiences with their incredible musicianship & new compositions. The success of the night partly stems from the fact that it presents Classical as if it were Rock music. Bands play through the pub’s PA, everyone has a pint in their hand and perhaps most importantly there are DJs playing throughout the night. Even the most skeptical visitors to the club can’t help but be stimulated by being so close to the high-quality musicianship presented at NONCLASSICAL.

Classical music can be part of everyone’s lives and this night is part of rediscovering its relevance. The NONCLASSICAL record label has released 5 groundbreaking albums to date, with 12 more due to release in 2010 from artists GéNIA (G. Prokofiev’s Piano No.1), Joby Burgess (Import / Export), Tansy Davies, Mercury Quartet, Olly Coates, Juice and House of Bedlam. The idea behind the releases is to record forward-thinking, contemporary “classical” music and then invite musicians and producers who usually work in different genres of music to remix them. Artists such as Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Hot Chip, Simon Tong (The Good, The Bad and The Queen, Gorillaz & The Verve) John Maclean (The Beta Band & The Aliens), and Gabriel Prokofiev have remixed pieces for the label to stunning effect. http://www.nonclassical.co.uk/

Program:
GéNIA performs Gabriel Prokofiev's Piano Book No. 1
Joby Burgess, percussion: CD release concert for "Import/Export"

Both Neel Murgai and Sameer Gupta have spent years studying this classical music from the masters, Pandit Krishna Bhatt (sitar) and Pandit Anindo Chatterjee (tabla). At the same time, they have been schooled in jazz and other forms of western music and are active in using their unique skill sets with numerous groups. Founded in the Summer of 2009, and without a doubt one of the best underground parties in the heart of gotham, Wax Poetics magazine, Halcyon, Raw Fusion, Great Weekend, and Fusicology, present this monthly all-vinyl oasis, featuring a dream team of resident romantics. Sharing deck duties are (six!) resident djs Amir (bbe), one half of the internationally known rare-record collector and mixtape duo, Kon & Amir; prolific beatsmith Ge-Ology (Female Fun), boasting remix credits from Pete Rock to PPP; The Twilite Tone (Great Weekend), both a key player in the seminal 90's Chicago house scene, and long-time producer and dj for Common; New York veterans OP! and Scribe (Raw Fusion NYC), and Jon Oliver (EVR), the baby of the bunch. The sounds are mind-wide, foot-friendly, and snap crackle popping. Anything is fair game, but you can expect to hear some soul, disco, dilla, boogie, hustle, hip-hop, old-school house, no wave, new jack swing, dancefloor jazz, bossa nova, salsa, funk, electro, and afrobeat.
