The PEN Festival: War

Description

War writing is an act of witness. It seeks to bring from the battlefront a way of connecting readers to an experience said to defy the power of words. Join these extraordinary journalists, who put themselves on the front line so we can know the terrible truths behind the headlines, for a discussion about the difficulties reporting the devastating facts of war. Deborah Amos is an award-winning correspondent who reported on the Gullf War in 1991, and more recently, Iraq for NPR. Philip Gourevitch has reported on the genocide in Rwanda, and Arnon Grunberg has made numerous trips to Iraq from where he has recently returned. The Humvee Sebastian Junger was riding in was hit by a land mine when he was in Afghanistan working on his forthcoming book War and the award-winning documentary Restrepo, and Daniele Mastrogiacomo’s ordeal of being kidnapped and held hostage is every journalist’s worst nightmare.

Chris Knox Benefit - SOLD OUT

Description

Hosted by Le Poisson Rouge, Wordless Music and WFMU, this show is a benefit for New Zealand musician Chris Knox, who suffered a series of life-altering strokes last year. It comes on the heels of Merge Records’ release of Stroke, a double album compilation of artists covering Knox songs with the proceeds going to benefit him and his family. All money raised for this event, save for circa $2,500 base costs to cover direct club expenses, is going straight to the Knox family.

Chris Knox’s presence and influence on New Zealand music can only properly be compared to the relationship between Caetano Veloso and Brazil, and Ali Farka Touré in Mali. He started as one of the first and most highly regarded Kiwi punk rock musicians in the late seventies, and went on to be known for his work as a comic artist, television host, film reviewer and music producer for releases on the illustrious Flying Nun roster. His work as Tall Dwarfs (with Alec Bathgate) and as a solo artist has influenced musicians far beyond his country’s borders, as evidenced by the lineup for this show.

Tickets go on sale Tuesday, March 30th at 12:00pm through http://www.kickstarter.com/.

This is a general admission, standing event.

No flash photography.

The show is sold out, but LPR Members have a chance to win tickets! Members can send an e-mail to chrisknox@lprnyc.com with "Knox Giveaway" in the subject line. To find out more about the LPR Membership program click here.

The award-winning composer Martin Bresnick presents a concert called Every Thing Must Go - celebrating his new CD release (of the same title) on Albany Records. Many of the works on the disc will be performed. The performers include Lisa Moore, piano, Ashley Bathgate, cello, Abigail Nims, mezzo-soprano, Wei-yi Yang, piano and the Preludio Saxophone Quartet.

"Every Thing Must Go" CD Most of the music on this new recording honors artists whose works are going or have gone, and each work is a song or composition in the lyrical mode. The compositions celebrate the work of departed masters - Yehuda Amichai, Gyorgy Ligeti, Johannes Brahms and Willie Dixon. The title of the disc also honors "Everything Must Go", the last album recorded by Walter Becker and Donald Fagin of Steely Dan. Their incisive songs are models of imagination, musicianship and lyrical wit.

Program: All music by Martin Bresnick

Willie's Way
Lisa Moore, piano

Falling
Abigail Nims, mezzo soprano
Wei-Yi Yang, piano

Ballade
Ashley Bathgate, cello
Lisa Moore, piano

Everything Must Go
Preludio Saxophone Quartet
Nick Statzer, soprano saxophone
Scott Edwards, alto saxophone
Joe D'Aleo, tenor saxophone
Daniel Mumbauer, baritone saxophone

Notes:

Willie’s Way, dedicated to the remarkable pianist and my inspiring collaborator Lisa Moore, takes off from the old blues tune “Spoonful” by Willie Dixon and especially the unforgettable version by Jack Bruce and Cream. Willie's Way has been adapted as a solo work for Lisa Moore from my earlier Fantasia on a Theme by Willie Dixon.

The song cycle Falling, commissioned by the distinguished mezzo-soprano and conductor Nadine Whitney and the Macon Georgia Arts Council, is built on poems I joined together by Kathryn Stripling Byer and David Bottoms. Kathryn and David went on to became Poets Laureate of their home States – North Carolina and Georgia.

Ballade, for violoncello and piano was commissioned and premiered by the master ‘cellist Andre Emelianoff. An instrumental ballade, it is a “song without words”, intended to evoke the austere, autumnal world of Brahms.

Every Thing Must Go, commissioned, recorded and premiered by the superlative PRISM Saxophone Quartet, explicitly bids farewell to music and musicians I have loved. The second movement, G.L. in Memoriam, borrows a song that haunted my teacher throughout his life. Although his work is done and he is gone, the real patterns of his song still sing transformed in mine.

In a recent book, “Every Thing Must Go, Metaphysics Naturalized” by James Ladyman and Don Ross, published sometime after I completed my own composition, I was intrigued to read the authors assertion that, strictly speaking, there are no “things” in the universe, only “real patterns, all the way down”. I found this observation surprisingly analogous to aspects of my own music. Moreover, in a universe not of our own making, in which we are neither the center nor the goal (if there is a goal), every thing indeed must go, and going is surely on every agenda. We go on singing.

Nonesuch Releases Timothy Andres' label debut, Shy and Mighty, May 18

Purchase our special advance ticket bundle to the May 17 performance and receive the "Shy & Mighty" CD for just $10. Click on "buy now" to learn more.

Album's 10 pieces feature piano soloist David Kaplan

"In his music, you can hear a lot of composers and other music Andres likes...But Andres is not a collage artist; from these diverse sources emerges something personal and urgent, full of feeling, even conflicting feelings; the tender and the caustic are never far away from each other."-Boston Globe

Nonesuch releases composer/pianist Timothy (Timo) Andres' Shy and Mighty on May 18, 2010. Comprising 10 interrelated piano pieces, Shy and Mighty is performed by Andres and pianist David Kaplan. This is the first recording of the work, and also Andres' label debut.

Andres was an undergraduate at Yale University when critics and fellow composers began to take notice of his skills as both writer and pianist. In 2004, the New Yorker's Alex Ross said of him: "He is a formidable pianist who has the measure of Charles Ives's towering 'Concord Sonata.' He is also a composer... Most notably, his music is beginning to show an individual voice, which is the hardest thing for a composer to achieve."

Though steeped in the classical canon, Andres has expressed his admiration for a range of artists, like Radiohead, Brian Eno, Múm, Sigur Rós, Wolf Parade, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, Olivia Tremor Control, and Boards of Canada. His classical influences include John Adams, Charles Ives, György Ligeti, and his former teachers, Ingram Marshall and Martin Bresnick.

While each track stands on its own, Andres conceived of Shy and Mighty as an album-length work. As Andres says in the album's liner notes: "When I sat down to write Shy and Mighty, this was very clearly my goal for it-that I would write an album for two pianos. I was very focused on the recorded medium-even though this is obviously something that works live, that was somehow secondary. The two albums that really did it for me were Olivia Tremor Control's Black Foliage and Boards of Canada's Music Has the Right to Children, both of which are structured in a similar way...larger set pieces and little transitional things in between. And that's what I set out to do- I didn't end up writing too many miniatures, but that was the idea, anyway."

Last spring John Adams showcased Andres in a young performers concert he curated for the Los Angeles Philharmonic that received critical praise. Upcoming performances include a Wordless Music concert at New York City's (le) poisson rouge on Monday, May 17.

Tickets are $15, or $10 for Students.
There is also a ticket and CD bundle available for $25.

Havana San Juan

Description

It all began in New York City, at a club called Havana San Juan. During the 1960’s and 1970’s, some of today’s most revered names in Latin music: Joe Cuba, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Machito, Tito Rodríguez, Celia Cruz, Cachao, among others, were merely gifted immigrant musicians from Cuba and Puerto Rico who sought a special venue; a place where they could come together and bring their own unique sound, their different rhythms, their collective son… That special place was Havana San Juan.

Havana and San Juan. Two islands. Two cities. Two rich and often turbulent histories came together through the harsh reality of exile and became inextricably intertwined through music. This was the birth of Salsa.

And for more than a decade, the Havana San Juan nightclub, located at 138th Street and Broadway 2nd, bore witness to some of Salsa and Latin music’s most brilliant collaborations, the most mind-blowing descargas, spectacular shows, nonstop dancing and unforgettable nights in which today’s most renowned artists performed their best music for an expatriated community.

Latin music ruled the dance hall. The echoes are still deeply etched in the memory of those who were there decades ago, and it still haunts the collective consciousness of those who share a passion for its sounds.

That same spirit drives every Havana San Juan events: a series of monthly classic revivals of the Golden Era of Salsa. As some of Miami’s most coveted events, the Havana San Juan series pay homage to the legacy of so many gifted artists through music and ambiance. For many, the events are an immersive “crash course” in Salsa and Mambo that take place every month at Miami hotspots like Grass, in the Design District, and Plunge, the Gansevoort’s rooftop pool. For others, the Havana San Juan events bring all the authenticity of the legendary New York club and brings back its most vivid vibrant memories.

Now, the event becomes an experience, a musical journey, as the original Havana San Juan musicians come together to play on the same stage after more than 30 years.

Although they have played in different ensembles throughout the years, percussionists Johnny Almendra and Alfredo “Freddy” Lugo will join Louis “El Maestro” Bauzo for the first time in three decades at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge (formerly the Village Gate), on Thursday, April 15th, 2010.

“This is truly a historic event,” says Havana San Juan creator and producer, Geno Chaviano. “It is my honor and privilege to be able to continue with a family tradition, to be a foot soldier of this movement, and to usher it into a new era so that it takes its rightful place on the global spotlight.”

After Chaviano contacted Louis Bauzo, “el maestro” himself worked his magic to reach out to Freddy and Johnny and assemble this musical Dream Team. And so, the these three rhythm masters will unite on stage a Le Poisson Rouge, a state-of-the art multimedia art cabaret, to relive the old glory days of the Havana San Juan nightclub where they jammed the nights away with the music of Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez and Machito. This historic reunion will be an epic musical event that, officially, marks the birth of the Havana San Juan Orchestra.

This is a general admission, standing event.

I Love Vinyl

Description

I Love Vinyl Turns 1!

Founded in the Summer of 2009, and without a doubt one of the best underground parties in the heart of gotham, Wax Poetics magazine, Halcyon, Raw Fusion, Great Weekend, and Fusicology, present this monthly all-vinyl oasis, featuring a dream team of resident romantics. Sharing deck duties are (six!) resident djs Amir (bbe), one half of the internationally known rare-record collector and mixtape duo, Kon & Amir; prolific beatsmith Ge-Ology (Female Fun), boasting remix credits from Pete Rock to PPP; The Twilite Tone (Great Weekend), both a key player in the seminal 90's Chicago house scene, and long-time producer and dj for Common; New York veterans OP! and Scribe (Raw Fusion NYC), and Jon Oliver (EVR), the baby of the bunch. The sounds are mind-wide, foot-friendly, and snap crackle popping. Anything is fair game, but you can expect to hear some soul, disco, dilla, boogie, hustle, hip-hop, old-school house, no wave, new jack swing, dancefloor jazz, bossa nova, salsa, funk, electro, and afrobeat. No pretentious bullshit, no dress code (not that you shouldn't come sexy as hell), no commercial radio crap, and no laptops allowed.

Description

The Unsilent Film Series is a new monthly series taking place at (le) Poisson Rouge. The Unsilent Film Series brings classic films back into the live music realm with new scores from prominent musicians. The combining of live music with films pre-dates actual sound technology for film. From the end of the 19th century on filmmakers and theatres have hired pianists, organists, and small ensembles to accompany silent films. The Unsilent Film Series takes this tradition and modernizes it combining silent films (and sometimes not-so-silent films) in a live music venue, with a variety of genres - ambient, indie-rock, jazz, classical - and a variety of cocktails.

This is a first come seated event. Seating is limited and not guaranteed; please arrive early.
