Warp20 NYC Closing Party

Description

Since its birth as a shop and record label in Sheffield in 1989, Warp has become one of the World’s most respected creative organisations. Quickly developing into a platform for innovative and boundary-breaking music talent, Warp became synonymous with such artists as LFO, Autechre, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada and most recently Grizzly Bear, Battles and Maximo Park. Running parallel to the music is an equally strong visual identity, famously established through partnerships with graphic design iconoclasts The Designer’s Republic and video auteur Chris Cunningham, placing Warp alongside legendary labels like Factory in British cultural history.

Warp took a logical but ambitious step in 2001 with the launch of Warp Films, winning a BAFTA for the very first production, Brass Eye satirist Chris Morris’ film debut My Wrongs… Since then high-profile features have come courtesy of Shane Meadows, whose masterpieces Dead Man’s Shoes and This Is England have enjoyed widespread success, the latter winning ‘Best British Film’ at the 2008 BAFTAs. 2009 sees development on more features with directors Chris Morris, Richard Ayoade (IT Crowd) and Paul King (Mighty Boosh).

In 2004, Warp pioneered the sale of unrestricted mp3s via the launch of award-winning download store Bleep.com. Hosting nearly 500 other independent labels, Bleep has sold over 2 million tracks to date.

Over 20 years, Warp has developed into a multifaceted creative company, able to forge a unique path through a rapidly changing and unpredictable landscape. In 2009, Warp will celebrate by bringing together its roster of artists, directors and associates for a series of multi-platform events, new music and film releases.

Cine-Brunch: Mars Attacks!

Description

Mars Attacks! (Tim Burton, 1996)

Screening is free. There is a two-item minimum per seat.

"Part homage and part demolition job, Mars Attacks! is perhaps the funniest piece of giddy schlock heartlessness ever committed to film." -Dallas Observer

"Mars Attacks! may be the first sci-fi disaster movie that's also an impish black-comedy prank. In Burton's giddily satiric epic, alien invaders want to destroy the planet, but it wouldn't be right to say they're aiming for world domination; they're more like demonic jesters out for a cosmic giggle. And Burton, the maniacal pop fantasist, is on their side." - Entertainment Weekly

"A thoroughly meanspirited big-budget movie is always a treasurable rarity." - TIME Magazine

Because this is a brand new project, we have limited online material for CB-3, though recordings from their last highly successful west coast tour are being edited now and expected up within a few days. CB-3 is in some ways similar to Michael Kang and Chris Berry's mother band Panjea http://www.panjeamusic.com/ though CB-3 has an electronic and hip-hop influence that makes it much more mainstream though like nothing you have ever heard.

Cine-Brunch: Jules & Jim (Francois Truffaut)

Description

Screening is free. There is a two-item minimum per seat.

Cine-Brunch at (Le) Poisson Rouge is a new take on the summer movie season - a free afternoon screening of art-house cinema classics. The inaugural run includes selections from auteurs such as Vittorio De Sica, Ingmar Bergman, Akira Kurosawa, Francois Truffaut, and others. Kicking off the series is The Bicycle Thief on 7/5. Blockbuster season leaves little room for films of substance to elbow into the billboards advertising superheroes, heists, explosions, and magic. But this summer join LPR for free screenings of French New Wave masterpieces, Neo-Realist tragedies, slapstick mysteries, and other films by the great auteurs of cinema history.

Cine-Brunch offers an alternative to the summer blockbuster: refined entertainment in a cool, comfortable environment where viewers can enjoy brunch or LPR's regular menu of tapas while taking in classic cinema and sipping a cocktail. And best of all, it's free!

Brunch specials - all $7 and under - include eggs any style, waffles and pancakes with fresh fruit or oatmeal with brown sugar. Cocktails start at $3, and Mimosas and Bloody Mary's can be had for $7.

UPCOMING CINE-BRUNCH SCREENINGS:

08.09 Jules & Jim

Jules and Jim

"More than 40 years old, François Truffaut's whirling dervish remains an ageless beauty." – Ed Gonzalez, The Village Voice

"Francois Truffaut’s third feature courses with joy – the joy of friendship, the joy of love and, perhaps most importantly of all, the joy of cinema... an absolute masterpiece." – Ian Freer, Empire

"Although a case can be made for Godard's Breathless, Jules and Jim was perhaps the most influential and arguably the best of those first astonishing films that broke with the past. There is joy in the filmmaking that feels fresh today and felt audacious at the time. [...] Jules and Jim is one of those rare films that knows how fast audiences can think, and how emotions contain their own explanations." – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"Jules and Jim is sad yet humorous, breathless yet contemplative, universal yet hermetic." – Chuck Rudolph, Slant Magazine

Experience the fusion of art + revelry. Critically acclaimed Gotham Early Music Scene stages its third annual series of concerts spotlighting nine of the most exciting and innovative early music groups working in New York City today. This year the concerts move downtown to Le Poisson Rouge, the celebrated new arts cabaret in Greenwich Village that has quickly become known for attracting large audiences to new music discovery.

It is the perfect environment for our setlists of 16th- through 18th-century music, as listeners at live concerts and operas at that time ate, talked, drank, and frequently sang along with the music, with abandon. Audiences of that time would be amazed to find modern listeners seated in rows, facing forward, keeping perfectly still.

The GEMS Project strikes a perfect balance, inviting music lovers of all kinds to immerse themselves in a nightlife of true substance and vitality and an atmosphere that is at once modern and timeless. That puts you closer than ever to cutting edge groups on the scene like Ensemble Viscera, East of the River, The Four Nations Ensemble, New York Baroque Dance Company and many others.

Le Poisson Rouge evokes the salons of the past, providing a modern audience with the opportunity to revel in early music with new eyes and ears.

Program

8:05 CLARION MUSIC SOCIETY

Although Russia is usually associated with the great Romantic music of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Rachmaninoff, the second half of the 18th century was also a ‘golden age’ of Russian music fostered by Catherine the Great, who reigned 1762 – 1796. This wonderful yet unknown repertoire is a specialty of Clarion’s Music Director Steven Fox, and their program includes many first editions prepared by him from manuscripts found in archives across Russia and Europe.

From the opera Yamchiki na Podstave Yevstigney, Fomin (1761-1800)

8:40 EAST OF THE RIVER

Virtuoso recorder players Nina Stern and Daphna Mor are joined by accordionist Uri Sharlin, and Yo Yo Ma's "Silk Road Ensemble" percussionist Shane Shanahan. Their program travels from Medieval Armenian chant to 14th century Italy to a composition by the 18th century Armenian composer Sayat-Nova. This group bridges the gap between early and world music in new and exciting ways.
