Ensemble FIRE and Pipa virtuoso Min Xiao-Fen performing music from Huang Ruo's new CD “To The Four Corners” on Naxos Records (http://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=8.559653
)

Program to include:

String Quartet No. 1: The Three Tenses
Drama Theater III: Written on the Wind
Four Fragments
Drama Theater II: Shifting Shades

“The last release by Naxos of Huang Ruo’s Chamber Concertos Nos. 1–4 was hailed as ‘a bold debut’ (Gramophone) which ‘shows a major compositional voice emerging’ (The Juilliard Journal Online). This disc, To The Four Corners, presents three of his Drama Theaters for various combinations of Eastern and Western instruments—including 18 beer bottles—the elusive subtitle of each strikingly suggesting a musical/cultural/philosophical idea. Similarly, The Three Tensesexplores a paradoxically integrated notion of time, where past, present and future create ‘a seamless entity called timelessness’. Huang Ruo won the 2008 International Composition Prize of the Luxembourg Society for Contemporary Music and has been cited by the New Yorker as ‘one of the most intriguing of the new crop of Asian-American composers.”

Southern Italian singer-songwriter, composer and actor Peppe Voltarelli will make his New York City concert debut on Wednesday November 11, 2009 at (Le) Poisson Rouge. Born in Italy’s Calabria region, the 40 year-old Voltarelli’s work is a modern Italian’s musical take on the diaspora of tight-knit Calabrian immigrant communities that continue to thrive throughout Europe and the Americas. At (Le) Poisson Rouge Voltarelli will offer a set drawn from his first solo album, 2007’s “Distratto ma però” (Distracted But However), a project which the Rome-based musician has supported with over 200 live shows in Italy and Europe, the results of which were released on his 2008 live album “Duisburg Nantes, Praga”. This New York appearance is part of Pan-American tour which will see Voltarelli perform for the first time in Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Los Angeles, Toronto and Montreal.

New York filmgoers have already had the opportunity to see Peppe Voltarelli in a leading role in the 2006 mockumentary feature “La Vera Leggenda di Tony Villar” (The Real Legend of Tony Villar), which showed in official selection at the 2007 TriBeCa Film Festival. The semi-biographical plot follows the path of a contemporary Italian singer (Voltarelli), on the trail of a crooner from his Calabrian village (Villar), who found fame and fortune in 1960’s Argentina and eventually disappeared into anonymity in the Bronx’s Italian community along Arthur Avenue. Directed by fellow Calabrian Giuseppe Gagliardi, “La Vera Leggenda di Tony Vilar” will be screened on Tuesday November 10, 2009 at NYU’s Casa Italiana as a preview to Wednesday’s (Le) Poisson Rouge event. Voltarelli and Gagliardi previously collaborated on “Doichlanda”, a 2003 documentary about Italian immigration to Germany -- their ongoing music and film relationship producing numerous award winning video clips.

Peppe Voltarelli is a founding member of "Il Parto delle Nuvole Pesanti" (The Birth of the Heavy Clouds) one of Italy’s seminal bands of the 1990’s, whose style is a mix of rock and Calabrian folk traditions. Voltarelli’s path as a touring musician has lead him to collaborations with other cutting edge Italian artists exploring similar mixes of old world and new world sounds, such as the German-born Italian raised Vinicio Capossela, Sicilian Roy Paci (Manu Chao) and Neopolitan Daniele Sepe. The Calabrian musician has twice been recognized in Italy’s prestigious Tenco Prize event.

Voltarelli has also contributed music and text to Italy’s theatrical stage with a 2001 work on the life of Domenico Modugno, the multiple Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter who penned one of the most well known Italian popular songs in the world, 1958’s San Remo Festival winning "Nel blu dipinto di blu”, more commonly know as "Volare". Along with the Florence-based Krypton troupe, Voltarelli composed the original music for "Roccu u Stortu" (Rocco the Crooked), the anti-war saga of a Calabrian soldier’s desertion in WWI. An active pacifist, Voltarelli traveled to Iraq in 2003 to participate in a peace concert held in Bagdad’s Palestine Hotel, an account of which can be seen in the documentary "Sotto il cielo di Baghdad" (Under the Baghdad Sky). Voltarelli is also a published author with a collection poetry and songs in Calabrian dialect with English translation.

The opening act for Peppe Voltarelli’s (Le) Poisson Rouge date is the Montreal-based Italo-Canadian singer-songwriter Marco Calliari. The Calabrian-born, one time Latin American star, now based in New York, Tony Villar will make a special guest appearance in Peppe Voltarelli’s set.

In late 2006, a letter was sent to T Bone Burnett, who later won the Grammy Award for the best album of the year 2008, Robert Plant and Allison Krauss's "Raising Sand" . The letter was from Akiko Yano who had been a huge admirer of T Bone. She asked him if he would produce an album for her.

It was over 30 years ago when T Bone Burnett received a vinyl disc of "Japanese Girl", Akiko's first album. Inspired, he tried to contact Akiko but he could not reach her at that time. After 30 years, his wish became a realty. Thus the project took off in LA in September 2007. T Bone Burnett brought the same cast of muscians who contributed to create "Raising Sand" including Marc Ribot (guitars).

Akiko has found a great joy of playing the music with Marc Ribot. She is always amazed by his profound understanding of music behind the original sound of his guitar and exhilarating energy, which gives another different dimension to her music.

Marc joined Akiko’s Japan tour last year and Akiko will bring him to Japan again in the end of this year.

The concert at Le Poisson Rouge will be their first NYC show they play together.

Akiko Yano’s latest album “akiko” was recorded in 2007 in LA and its original Japanese version was release in 2008 only in Japan. As Akiko loved the album so much she wanted to make it available worldwide, she decided to launch her own label “TABI” for her international release. Now the English version of “akiko” is available online worldwide.

This is a first-come seated event. A purchased ticket does not guarantee a seat. Please arrive early.

Performa: Scratch the Grand Finale

Description

Inspired by the Scratch Orchestra, an experimental musical ensemble formed in London in 1969, Performa will invite artists to present 5-10 minute works responding to the following topics: "Dining on Radio Waves", "Lust is a Force", "Between Noise and Silence", "Songs as Architects" and "Motion and Magic" curated by Performa.

$15 | $11 for Performa members

The Scratch Orchestra was an experimental musical ensemble founded in London in the spring of 1969 by Cornelius Cardew, Michael Parsons and Howard Skempton. The Orchestra reflected Cardew’s musical philosophy at that time. This meant that anyone could join, graphic scores were used (rather than traditional sheet music), and there was an emphasis on improvisation. The Scratch Orchestra arose from Cardew’s ‘Experimental Music’ class at Morley College, London, which served as a venue for extra rehearsals for Scratch Orchestra concerts, but Scratch Orchestra rehearsals were also held separately. The first meeting of the Scratch Orchestra was at St. Katharine’s Dock, London, 1 July 1969. It was announced by means of a ‘Draft Constitution’, published in “The Musical Times” in June 1969. The Draft Constitution set out categories of musical activity: Improvisation Rites, Popular Classics, Compositions, and Research Projects.

Performa’s Grand Finale for 09 adopts and adapts such an approach, creating a ‘Draft Constitution’ that responds to the Futurist themes of the ’09 biennial. Invited artists, musicians, writers and poets will present work related to the seemingly disparate topics of food, lust, noise, architecture and magic. Scratch the Grand Finale suggests the spirit of the Futurist Synthetic Theater and Filippo Marinetti’s assertion “spectators will be made to ‘forget the monotony of everyday life’ through a ‘labyrinth of sensations’ characterized by the most exasperating originality combined in unexpected ways.”

Invited artists will be asked to present a five to ten minute work responding to the following subtitles: Dining on Radio Waves; Lust is a Force; Between Noise & Silence; Songs for Architects; and Motion & Magic. The stage will be set with a arrangement of musical and Futurist inspired instrumentation and means from record decks, green light to perfume and the bassoon.

John Hollenbeck plays Hollenbeck + Meredith Monk

Description

John Hollenbeck has gained widespread recognition as the driving force behind the unclassifiable Claudia Quintet and the ambitious John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, groups with roots in jazz, world music, and contemporary composition. He is well known in new-music circles for his longtime collaboration with Meredith Monk, composing and performing the percussion scores for her Magic Frequencies, Mercy, and The Impermanence Project. He has been commissioned by the Bang on a Can All-Stars, Gotham Wind Symphony, Ethos Percussion Group, the Painted Bride Art Center (Philadelphia), and others.

This show spotlights Hollenbeck in each of these roles, opening with music from Rainbow Jimmies (GPE), his new CD of chamber works, played by violinist Todd Reynolds, vibraphonist Matt Moran, and the composer.

Next comes Future Quest, a quintet devoted to “re-imaginings” of Meredith Monk’s music, with vocalist Theo Bleckmann, saxophonists Ellery Eskelin and Tony Malaby, pianist Gary Versace, and Hollenbeck on percussion. Monk herself will be in attendance.

The evening culminates in a set by the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, performing music from the group’s lavishly-praised new CD, Eternal Interlude (Sunnyside), including three New York premieres.
