Bol•ly•wood, n. [Humorous blend of the names of Bombay and Hollywood.]
1. The Indian film industry, based in Bombay; Bombay regarded as the base of this industry.
Bollywood is shorthand for the Hindi-language film industry centered in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), India. It is the world's largest, yearly churning out hundreds of 3-hour musical epics that also drive South Asia's pop music industry. To the current generation of South Asian club-goers, Bollywood is synonymous with the 1970s golden age of masala films. This decade produced blockbusters like Don and Sholay (which still holds the record for most-viewed film ever made) not to mention "some of the fattest funk tunes that ever pimp-rolled their way down Music Street, Bombay."
Recently, Bollywood has lit up the cultural radar of the west, resulting in extensive press coverage, references in films like Moulin Rouge and Ghost World, and the nomination of Lagaan for best foreign film Oscar. Not surprisingly, classic Bollywood soundtracks from the 70s have been the focus of no less than 5 compilations in the past few years. (However, with the exception of Outcaste Records comp Bollywood Funk, these have been mostly compiled by and for outsiders to South Asian culture and often provide an uneven view of the genre.) Even the cutting edge of hiphop production has been shaped by the retro Bollywood sound, as producers like Dan the Automator, DJ Shadow, Timbaland and DJ Quik dip into Bollywood's back-catalog to widen their production palette.
Dis•co n. pl. dis•cos
1. A discotheque.
2. Popular dance music, especially of the late 1970s, characterized by strong repetitive bass rhythms.
In NY the rise of interest in Bollywood coincides with a general resurgence in the sounds of the city's own musical golden age: the progressive disco associated with legendary clubs like the Loft, the Paradise Garage and Studio 54. In addition to the numerous compilations & re-releases focusing on the producers and DJs of this era, the Garage ethos has inspired a new generation of happenings at clubs like Spa & APT, as well as a new generation of electronic musicians.
"Disko Madame" sonically reinterprets the technicolor underworld of Bollywood's past. The band's lead singer, Meetu Chilana, personifies the passion of Zeenat, Parveen, and Helen bridging the sound of fiery female icons from yesterday to today.
This is a general admission, standing event.

An Evening with Dan Barber of Blue Hill
An Evening with Dan Barber of Blue Hill
Description
This is a first come seated event. Seating is limited and not guaranteed; please arrive early.
Join chef Dan Barber in a conversation on the food sustainability movement, and the way in which the arts can foster its presence. Barber’s philosophy combines old world farming wisdom with new agricultural technologies in order to create food that is at once delicious, innovative, healthy and environmentally responsible. Dan Barber now takes his sustainability advocation a step further by explaining the positive impact the arts can have on spreading these ideas to a wider audience. As Dan explains, “The issue of food and agriculture sustainability is currently attracting a tsunami of attention. Art can play a role in the next level of this movement.”
To demonstrate this unique collaboration, The Mirror Visions Ensemble performs sneak peek excerpts from know thy farmer™—a cantata by Richard Pearson Thomas set to a number of texts drawn from the menus of Blue Hill at Stone Barns Restaurant—which will receive its official world premiere on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at Merkin Concert Hall.
Dan Barber, Executive Chef and Co-owner
In May of 2000, Dan opened Blue Hill restaurant with family members David and Laureen Barber.
Since then, his writings on food and agricultural policy have appeared in the New York Times, along with articles in Gourmet, The Nation, Saveur and Food & Wine Magazine. Dan’s efforts to create a consciousness around our everyday food choices have led him to the World Economic Forum’s 2010 annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland as well as to TED2010, where he looked toward a new ecological approach to cuisine.
Appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, Dan continues the work that he began as a member of Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture's board of directors: to blur the line between the dining experience and the educational, bringing the principles of good farming directly to the table.
As chef and co-owner of Blue Hill and Blue Hill at Stone Barns, Dan has received the James Beard awards for Best Chef: New York City (2006) and for Outstanding Chef (2009). In 2009 he was named one of the world's most influential people in Time’s annual "Time 100".

Don't miss Dardashti's CD Release Party for "The Naming." With original live music modern dance, video art, and special guests, it promises to be an amazing night! Mycale (the all-female John Zorn Vocal Project) opens the set at 7 pm. THE NAMING is the new multi-disciplinary work created by the Persian Jewish vocal innovator, Galeet Dardashti--the driving force behind the popular all-woman Middle Eastern band, Divahn. In THE NAMING, Dardashti draws on the Eastern music deep in her bones to transform the ghostly outlines of Biblical women into full-blown flesh-and-blood personalities. She unites the Persian classical music that made her grandfather a musical icon in Iran, with a deep connection to Jewish poetry and song, to create lush electronica-edged Middle Eastern compositions in Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, and Persian. Her songs tell the stories of why the brilliant Queen of Sheba shaved her legs, how the stunning Vashti laid down the line for her drunken husband, and how a mysterious witch spoke King Saul’s doom and then served him a nice dinner. For Dardashti, the stories of some of the women in her songs also intertwine with her own Iranian family’s tales of women breaking the rules as well as those of women in the Middle East today fighting to have their voices heard; some also echo through her personal story, in her recent transition into motherhood.
"A heart-stopping effort" that will "make you fall hard in love" (The Huffington Post)
"The marriage of centuries is fully and passionately consummated, providing an enveloping sonic venue for Dardashti’s powerful voice and Talmudic wisdom" (Milwaukee Express).
Featuring:Galeet Dardashti (vocals),Matt Kilmer (percussion),Alan Kushan (santur),Jessie Reagan (cello),Skye Steele (violin),Bryan Noll (electronic soundscapes)
AND MORE!
